How to write a CV that passes ATS in the UAE

An applicant tracking system scores your CV before a recruiter sees it. This guide covers how it scores, how to build a CV that ranks, and how to use AI without sounding like it.

What ATS actually does

ATS ranks CVs against the job description. A low rank is fixable.

What is ATS?

An Applicant Tracking System is software that companies use to collect, organise, and rank job applications. When you apply online through a company careers page or job board, your CV goes into an ATS before any human reads it. It parses your CV into structured data (pulling out your name, job titles, skills, dates) and scores it against the job description. Recruiters then sort by score and start reading from the top. If your CV scores low, it sits so far down the list that nobody opens it.

Sources: Jobscan, Fortune 500 ATS report, 2025 · Ladders eye-tracking study, 2018 · Enhancv, interviews with 25 US recruiters, which is also where the 400+ applicants figure comes from.

THE MYTH
"75% of resumes are automatically rejected by ATS and never seen by a human."
THE TRUTH
ATS ranks and sorts resumes. It doesn't silently delete them. In interviews with 25 US recruiters, 92% said they don't use their ATS to auto-reject a CV for its format or design. A human still decides. But they start from the top of the ranked list.
What this means for you: score high enough to land in the part of the list a recruiter reads. Matching keywords, clean formatting and a clear structure get you there.
How ATS processes your CV
Step 1, Parse: ATS strips your formatting and extracts raw data, name, titles, dates, skills, education. Complex layouts, tables, columns, and graphics confuse the parser.

Step 2, Match: It compares your CV against the job description keyword by keyword. The skills, titles and certificates in the job ad are what it looks for.

Step 3, Rank: You get a match score. Recruiters filter by score and start reviewing from the highest. A low score puts your CV below the part of the list anyone reads.

Step 4, Knockout: Some roles have hard knockout questions, work authorisation, specific certifications, minimum experience. If you fail these, you're out regardless of score.
UNDERSTAND THIS BEFORE APPLYING
What sinks your ATS score
  • Using tables, columns, or text boxes: the parser can't read them
  • Saving as .jpeg, .png, or a heavily designed PDF, use .docx or clean PDF
  • Putting key info in headers/footers: ATS often ignores these sections
  • Using fancy icons, graphics, or logos in your CV
  • Generic job titles that don't match what the employer searched for
  • Missing keywords that appear in the job description
  • Spelling job titles incorrectly or using abbreviations only
AVOID ALL OF THE ABOVE
02

How to build the CV

Structure, order, and content. Get these right and you pass ATS and impress the human reader.

The CV structure, in this order
  • 1. Contact Info: Name, phone, email, LinkedIn URL, city (Dubai, UAE) and your visa status, for example “Own visa, valid to March 2028” or “Freelance permit”. In the UAE, visa status is often the first thing a recruiter checks. Add “UAE driving licence” if you hold one: transport and supervisor roles ask for it. Photo, nationality and date of birth only if the ad asks for them. Hosting and brand ambassador roles often do.
  • 2. Professional Summary, 3 lines max. Who you are, your years of experience, and your top 2 strengths. Write this LAST after the rest is done.
  • 3. Core Skills: A clean list of 8 to 12 keywords that match the job. This is where ATS picks up most of its score. Use the exact words from the job description.
  • 4. Work Experience, Reverse chronological. Each role: company, title, dates, 3 to 5 bullet points of achievements, not duties.
  • 5. Education & Certifications, Most recent first. Include any NEBOSH, JAM Training, event-related certs here.
  • 6. Languages, Only if relevant. English fluency matters for UAE event roles.
FOLLOW THIS EXACTLY
Matching the keywords
Of everything in this guide, this moves your score most. Copy the job description. Paste it into ChatGPT or Claude. Ask: "List the top 15 skills and keywords from this job description that I should include in my CV." Then check your CV, how many are missing?

For UAE event roles, always include where relevant:
Event Operations · Crowd Management · Zone Management · Staff Briefing · Venue Operations · VIP Management · Health & Safety · Logistics · On-site Coordination · NEBOSH · Liveforce · Brand Activation · Event Execution · Stakeholder Communication
Tip: Adjust your Core Skills section for each role you apply to. It takes 3 minutes and lifts your score.
TAILOR EVERY APPLICATION
Write achievements, not duties
The biggest mistake on CVs: listing what your job was, not what you accomplished. Recruiters know what a Zone Manager does. They want to know what you delivered.
WEAK, DUTY
"Responsible for managing staff during events and ensuring zones were covered."
STRONG, ACHIEVEMENT
"Supervised a team of 18 marshals across 4 zones during a 40,000-attendee event, maintaining zero safety incidents across a 3-day run."
WEAK
"Worked as a usher at various events in Dubai."
STRONG
"Delivered VIP guest experience for 500+ guests at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, managing access control and coordinating with client protocol teams."
PUT THE NUMBERS IN
Format rules
  • 1 or 2 pages. Senior roles: 2 pages. Junior/mid: 1 page.
  • Single column, clean white background, standard fonts (Calibri, Arial, Georgia)
  • Save as PDF or .docx: never .jpeg, .png, or heavily designed files
  • Font size 10 to 12pt for the body, 14 to 16pt for your name
  • Consistent date format throughout (e.g. May 2024 to Present)
  • No photo unless the ad asks for one, and no flags or icons
  • No tables, columns, text boxes, or infographic-style layouts
  • No "References available upon request": wastes space
  • No "Objective" sections: replace with Professional Summary

Using AI for the first draft

Give AI the facts and it writes a usable first draft in minutes. Here is the method.

The main prompt, start here
Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Paste this prompt with your own details filled in:
AI PROMPT, COPY & CUSTOMISE
I need you to write a professional CV for me. My name: [Your Full Name] Location: Dubai, UAE Target role: [e.g. Event Operations Manager / Zone Manager / Coordinator] Years of experience: [X years in events] Key skills: [list your skills] My work history: - [Company / Agency Name] | [Role] | [Date to Date] Tasks: [describe everything you did, even small things] - [Repeat for each role] Certifications: [NEBOSH / JAM Training / any others] Languages: [English / Arabic / etc.] Visa status: [Own visa, valid to (month, year) / Freelance permit / other] UAE driving licence: [Yes / No] Please structure the CV as follows: 1. Contact Info (with visa status and driving licence) 2. Professional Summary (3 lines, strong & specific) 3. Core Skills (12 keywords matching event industry) 4. Work Experience (achievement-focused bullet points with numbers) 5. Education & Certifications Make every bullet point achievement-focused with specific numbers and context. Use clean formatting, no tables, no columns. Optimise for ATS keyword matching for event operations roles in UAE.
Tip: The more detail you give AI about what you did, the better the output. Instead of "worked as a usher", describe the event, the scale, who you dealt with, and what you were responsible for.
The keyword prompt
Paste the job description you're applying to and use this prompt:
KEYWORD EXTRACTION PROMPT
Here is a job description: [PASTE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION HERE] Please: 1. List the top 15 keywords and skills I must include in my CV 2. Identify the 3 most important qualifications they are looking for 3. Suggest the best job title to use on my CV that matches this role 4. Flag any knockout criteria (e.g. specific certifications, visa status)
The bullet point prompt
Already have a CV but the bullet points are weak? Use this:
BULLET POINT REWRITE PROMPT
Rewrite these CV bullet points to be achievement-focused, specific, and ATS-optimised for event operations roles in UAE. Add numbers and context where logical. Remove all passive language. My current bullets: - [Paste your current bullet points here] Rules: - Start each bullet with a strong action verb - Include scale (number of staff, attendees, events, etc.) - Show the result or outcome of each task - Keep each bullet to 1 or 2 lines - Do not make up statistics: if no number exists, use context instead
USE FOR EVERY ROLE IN YOUR CV

Making it sound like you

AI-written CVs have tells, and recruiters spot them. Here is how to take them out.

Why this matters: recruiters read hundreds of CVs, and AI drafts all sound alike. A CV that reads like everyone else's gives them no reason to stop on yours. Don't let a robot write your CV without you editing it.
Phrases that tell a recruiter AI wrote it
AI uses these so often that recruiters now read them as a sign it wrote the CV:
"Spearheaded innovative solutions" "Results-driven professional" "Leveraged robust frameworks" "Navigated the evolving landscape" "Passionate about making a difference" "Mission-critical deliverables" "Dynamic team player" "Proactively synergised"
DELETE EVERY ONE OF THESE
Five ways to make AI output sound like you
  • Add specifics: Replace vague AI phrases with exact names, numbers, and events. "Large-scale events" → "GITEX 2025, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Dubai Marathon"
  • Vary your sentence structure: AI writes in one rhythm. Mix short bullets with longer ones.
  • Use your own voice in the summary: Rewrite the summary section by hand, in your own words. This is what recruiters read first.
  • Remove every adjective that doesn't add fact: "highly motivated", "passionate", "dedicated", meaningless. Cut them.
  • Use a rewriting tool last, not first: a tool like WalterWrites (section 05) can smooth the rhythm, but only you can add the facts. Read every line after it and put back anything it changed about your work.
The humanise prompt, for after AI writes your draft
After AI writes your CV, run this prompt on the output:
HUMANISE PROMPT
Rewrite this CV to sound natural and human. Remove all classic AI writing patterns including: "spearheaded", "leveraged", "dynamic", "results-driven", "mission-critical", "passionate about", "robust", "navigated the evolving landscape", and any other corporate buzzwords that feel generic or robotic. Rules: - Keep all facts, numbers, and dates exactly as they are - Use simple, direct language: the tone of a confident professional - Vary sentence length and structure - Make the summary sound like a real person wrote it - Remove any adjectives that don't add factual meaning CV to rewrite: [PASTE YOUR AI-GENERATED CV HERE]

The cover letter

Most people skip the cover letter, so a good one stands out.

The four-paragraph cover letter
Para 1, The Hook (2 sentences): Who you are, what role you're applying for, and one specific reason you're the right person. Skip "I am writing to apply for...": nearly every other letter opens with it.

Para 2, your proof (3 or 4 sentences): Your most relevant experience with specific numbers. Reference the company or event by name to show you've done research.

Para 3, Why Them (2 sentences): One specific thing about the company that makes you want to work there. Not generic, actually research them.

Para 4, The Close (1 sentence): Confident call to action. "I'd welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience can contribute to [Company Name]'s upcoming season."
KEEP IT TO HALF A PAGE
The cover letter prompt
COVER LETTER PROMPT
Write a short, punchy cover letter for a job application. Role applying for: [Job Title] Company: [Company Name] My background: [X years in events, key roles held] My strongest relevant experience: [Describe 1 to 2 specific achievements] Job description: [Paste the JD] Rules: - 4 paragraphs, half a page maximum - Do NOT start with "I am writing to apply for" - First sentence must immediately establish credibility - Reference the company by name - End with a confident, specific call to action - Sound like a confident human, not a template - No buzzwords

Mistakes that get CVs ignored

The most common reasons CVs get ignored in UAE event hiring. Fix them this week.

One CV for every job
Sending the same CV to every role is one of the top reasons for silence. A CV for a Zone Manager role should look different from one for an Event Coordinator role. The keywords, the summary, the skills section: all should shift to match the job description.

The fix: Keep a master CV. For each application, spend 5 minutes updating the skills section and summary to match the keywords in that specific job post. AI makes this take 3 minutes.
NEVER SEND THE SAME CV TWICE WITHOUT TAILORING
Other mistakes that get you ignored
  • An email address with a nickname or random numbers in it: make a clean firstname.lastname@ address
  • No LinkedIn profile link: or a LinkedIn that contradicts your CV
  • Gaps in employment with no explanation: brief note like "Freelance Event Work" covers it
  • Applying for roles you're clearly underqualified for with no tailoring or explanation
  • Typos and grammatical errors, run every CV through Grammarly before sending
  • File named "CV Final FINAL v3 use this one.pdf": name it "FirstName_LastName_CV.pdf"
  • Listing every job since you were 18: keep only the last 5 to 7 years unless earlier experience is highly relevant
  • Always follow up 5 to 7 days after applying with a brief, professional message to the hiring contact
The WhatsApp CV trap
In the UAE events industry, many jobs are shared via WhatsApp and CVs are sent as image files. Never send your CV as a screenshot or image. It cannot be parsed, searched, or forwarded professionally.

Always send as PDF. On WhatsApp, send the PDF file itself, never a photo of it, with a 2 or 3 line intro message above it.
WHATSAPP CV MESSAGE TEMPLATE
Hi [Name], My name is [Your Name]. I have [X] years of experience in UAE events across roles including [your key roles]. I came across the [role/opportunity] and would love to be considered. Please find my CV attached. Happy to discuss further at your convenience. Best regards, [Name] | +971 XX XXX XXXX
ALWAYS ATTACH PDF. NEVER AN IMAGE.

Questions people ask about CVs in the UAE

Short answers. The detail is in the sections above.

What is the best CV format for jobs in the UAE?

One or two pages, one column, saved as a PDF or Word file. In this order: contact details with your visa status, a three-line summary, 8 to 12 core skills taken from the job ad, work experience written as results rather than duties, then education and certificates. Section 02 has the full layout.

Should I put my visa status on my CV in the UAE?

Yes. It is often the first thing a UAE recruiter checks. Put it in the contact line, for example “Own visa, valid to March 2028” or “Freelance permit”, and add a UAE driving licence if you hold one.

Should I put a photo on my CV in the UAE?

Only if the ad asks for one. Hosting and brand ambassador roles often do. Otherwise leave it off: it takes space and does nothing for your ATS score.

Does ATS reject CVs automatically?

Rarely for format alone. In interviews with 25 US recruiters, 92% said they don't use their ATS to auto-reject a CV for its format or design (Enhancv). The ATS ranks you, and a low rank means nobody reaches your CV. Matching the keywords in the job ad moves you up.

Can I use ChatGPT to write my CV?

Yes, for the first draft. Give it the facts, then rewrite the summary yourself and delete phrases like “results-driven” or “spearheaded”. Never let it add a number, a title or a job you did not have. Sections 03 and 04 have the prompts.
